Exploring new places is fun, but it's even more fun when you can experience them through the eyes of a child.  Suddenly, even the mundane becomes new and exciting.

For instance, who would have thought throwing out deer corn was so much fun?

 Lilah & Grandpa

Climbing sand dunes on the beach . . .

becomes the most entertaining activity of the hour.

Hunting for fossils with dad is much more interesting than matching shapes on a piece of paper.

And let's not forget our favorite sport!

Looking under rocks!

Lilah shares a love of this activity with her Comrade-in-arms.

Needless to say, since this is rattlesnake country, this sport will be taken off the line-up of activities for 2012.

Sidenote:  This was Dillon's first time for free play with children. While the Border Collies are leery of small humans, Dillon has decided that he very much enjoys their company. Tiny humans are slot machines for dispensing cookies and he's all over that idea.

Lilah is so cute! Not at all surprised that Dillon enjoys the smaller people. He's a Lab, after all. My Lab would happily wag her tail while little children pulled her tail and ears, dumped sand on her face, or gave her sudden unexpected big hugs as she walked along the sidewalk. (Not something to encourage in children.) BTW, have you noticed that dogs don't try to jump on children? That's because they are already at eye level. *** About the snakes -- what can you do about them? I'd hate to have one of the dogs or other animals bitten.

At first I thought Lilah was wearing a Teletubby costume in the first photo. Is the pink headset her hearing protection from a shooting session? Or earmuffs for the cold? Not kidding on this. She looks so cute in all the photos. Even Everett (I think that's baby brother's name) is having fun.

Lilah's ear protection: I honestly can't remember why she was wearing those then. Her outfit is from Carhart. (ranch kid clothing) Snakes: I am a live and let live person - except for rattlesnakes around my dogs. I will blow those suckers to smithereens with a shotgun every time I see one. We will make sure that all dogs have the anti-venom shot (that only Oli has now) and unfortunately as much as I hate to do it, Dillon will have to go to a de-snaking clinic so he associates snakes with an electric shock. I hate it, but it may save his inquisitive life. We will not, however, send Lilah to the same clinic.
